Total Eclipse Trip to Indiana

The eclipse is an awe-inspiring event to experience, and I highly recommend visiting the path of totality the next chance you get. The next total eclipse will be on August 12, 2026, visible from Spain, Iceland, Greenland, Russia, and a slice of Portugal. For the US, it won't occur until August 22, 2044, so you'll have plenty of time to prepare.

Not only did we prepare our camper for the long adventure in our land yacht, but we also made eclipse crafts, watched videos about the eclipse, and even attended an event at the library to learn more about the celestial wonder that was about to occur. I get downright nerdy about events and locations we want to visit, and the curriculum creates itself, making teaching a breeze.

We left Wisconsin and headed south to Hidden Paradise Campground in the backwoods village of St. Paul, Indiana. With all the talk of massive crowds racing to the path of totality, I worried about traffic and crowded conditions. Schools were closing in many places, and locals were advised to stock at least two weeks of household food and other provisions ahead of the major event. The 2024 eclipse would be Indiana's largest tourist event in history, so we came prepared to avoid burdening the supply chain.

To our pleasant surprise, we enjoyed a very laid-back environment and a mostly private viewing of the eclipse. While most campers ventured to an open field to view the celestial wonder, we found our campsite to be the perfect spot. Our camper nestled cozily into a site by the Flat Rock River, where we relaxed and snacked on Star Crunch, Cosmic Brownies, Moon Pies, and Sun Chips.

Before the eclipse, I noticed a gentleman and his wife sitting at a picnic table covered with mason jars full of water. Curious, I asked if he was conducting a science experiment. He replied that he was trying to trap eclipse energy in the water, believing that drinking it would provide medicinal benefits. I thanked him for his answer and wished him a good day. I think I'll stick to Bubbly for now.

The weather was absolutely perfect that day - not a cloud in the sky! Those pesky clouds that were originally forecasted to block our view somehow managed to disappear, leaving us with crystal clear conditions that were just ideal for our outdoor activities. It was one of those rare occasions where the weather forecast didn't quite pan out, but in the best possible way, allowing us to fully enjoy the beautiful scenery without any obstructions.

The entire weekend was peaceful and quiet as we watched our boys construct boats from parts of a log that had fallen during a tornado the previous year. They used paper plates to make sails, and each new voyage down the Flat Rock provided an opportunity to observe flaws in the boat, inspiring improvements for the next design.

What a stellar weekend we had enjoying the wonders carefully crafted by our Creator. God truly is amazing!
