Nine Homeschooling Lessons and Activity Ideas for Families that Do Not Celebrate Halloween

Updated: Oct 25, 2023

Halloween used to be a pleasurable holiday for me. My sweet tooth and creative mind for costume design always excited me to go out and have a good time. However, over the years, we've realized that this is not a Christian holiday, and we do not wish to partake in most of the traditional fall festivities anymore.

If you feel the same way about Halloween, check out these alternative studies for your homeschooling curriculum this year.

Learn about spiders!

Spiders are all over the place in October. We always get those nasty orbweaver spiders that double as a free Halloween decoration. What a perfect time of year to study these unique creatures.

Discover Owls

Owls are often typical decorations in the fall. These birds are fascinating to study at any time of year, so why not in autumn?

Read about the seven plagues

The seven plagues of Egypt are like reading a horror story. Because it was for the people living there at the time. Egypt was the most sophisticated society in the world, but God had a plan to show Pharoah he was not as mighty as he thought he was.

Read about all seven plagues in Exodus 7:14-11:10.

Study mummies

Speaking of ancient history, if you're already in Egypt, you may as well learn about the famous pyramids and the mummification process. There are numerous free coloring pages for mummies that are one Google search away. Print one off and start coloring your mummy.

Get in the kitchen!

Fall is a beautiful time for a rich culinary experience. Make caramel apples, pumpkin bread, pumpkin rolls, or, if you're brave enough, homemade candy corn.

Take a fall field trip!

Take a trip to a corn maze, pumpkin patch, or apple orchard. The crisp air is moving in, so why not get out and enjoy the pleasant weather while you still can?

Dancing worm experiment

Make your gummy worms come to life with this easy experiment.

1. Cut gummy worms into thin, long strips.

2. Submerge the worms in a cup of water with a few tablespoons of baking soda for roughly 20-30 minutes.

3. Drop the baking soda-coated worms into a large, clear glass jar of white vinegar and watch them wiggle!

Land on the moon!

There are eight phases of the moon. Can you name them all? What else is there to discover on the moon?

Study the human body

There are skeletons all over the place in October. Why not take the opportunity to point out the ulna, radius, femur, etc? There will be plenty of chances to learn about the different bones in the body everywhere you go. Get a free printable worksheet on the human skeleton here. And here. These worksheets are links to other websites, and I did not create them.
