Should You Homeschool All Year Round? FIVE Reasons to Study in the Summer Too!

Updated: Jun 14, 2023

With the temps warming up and the flowers beginning to bud, it's easy to think about taking a break from school. But is it a good idea?

Don't let the sunny season be an excuse to put a haul to learning - warm weather can be as inspiring as any other and provide you with plenty of opportunities to keep studying. Homeschooling can be an incredible journey that can extend all year round. Here are five great reasons to stay the course and reap the rewards of homeschooling all year.

1. Learning never stops; it is an ongoing process that requires dedication, focus, and consistency. Unfortunately, long breaks from learning can cause us to lose some of the information we have previously gained due to the lack of repetition. Long pauses can be particularly damaging when retaining complex concepts or remembering facts and figures. The key is to keep up with our learning and ensure that our knowledge remains fresh by regularly reviewing what we have learned. School during the summer solves the problem of lost retention.

2. It is more like real life. Yes, I want my kids to be kids, but it's not like when you become an adult, you automatically get summers off. I think the whole idea of summer vacation sets you up for disappointment. Time to play is essential for a healthy work-life balance all year round, especially during summer. Playing helps us to relax, destress and re-energize in ways that can be difficult to achieve during our busy lives. With a few simple adjustments to our daily routine, we can take the time to enjoy summer activities and continue our education simultaneously.

3. You don't have to work as intensely. As summer approaches, it's essential to take the time to learn and grow academically. Taking the time to learn through the summer months can help students get their academic hours in without committing to long days hammering out worksheets. Students can use their summer months best by engaging in activities, educational resources, travel, online courses, and gaining valuable knowledge. As a bonus, kids get more personal time to explore their interests.

4. Exploring during the shoulder season can be a great way to save money and enjoy a less crowded experience. From discounted hotel rates to shorter lines at popular attractions, travelers can maximize their vacation by opting for the shoulder season. Not only will they be able to save on costs, but they will also be able to get more out of their trip by exploring new locations and taking advantage of the less hectic atmosphere. Homeschool families can tap into these savings when they educate year-round! School can happen at history and science museums, national parks, and other landmarks. You're taking a break but still learning while having pool time every afternoon. Travel is exciting and highly educational!

5. Regular breaks throughout the school day and year can be beneficial for students, helping them stay focused and engaged. You can help ensure they receive a quality education by guaranteeing they take enough breaks. Some kids and parents need to take more frequent recesses. Some days for us are tough going, and if I try to force it, my oldest son will shut down, and it will take 30 minutes to finish one page in his language arts book when it usually takes five. Going slow all year makes it easier for us to accommodate those needs.

Conclusion

Considering each family's unique needs is essential when choosing a homeschooling schedule. With different types of plans available to choose from—block scheduling, year-round or traditional scheduling, and even online or hybrid learning—families can find the best fit that meets their needs while providing the highest quality education.
