Can't Afford Homeschooling? Try These Ideas Before Dismissing the Lifestyle

1. Set up your budget to run the house on ONE INCOME. This advice is hands down some of the best financial advice I have ever received.

Use the other income to pay off debt and invest so you'll be comfortable when it's time to start school. Early in our marriage, we were introduced to Financial Peace University. There are workbooks to purchase, but Dave Ramsey's advice is free in the form of a podcast and his website. The library also has all his books.

2. Work from home: Teach your kids math instead of a 2-hour commute.

3. Let go of what you believe homeschooling to be. Usually, a school day only takes about 2-3 hours. An 8-hour school day in a building is filled with interruptions, lunch breaks, homeroom, and other fluff. It's not hard to see that you'd have time to homeschool even by cutting your work week down by one day.

4. There are no schedules, so learning can take place any time of day, including weekends, evenings, and in the summer.

5. Ditch the classroom at home. It's unnecessary because more learning happens outside those four walls anyway. Once you're comfortable with homeschooling, it's okay to nerd out over geography maps and science equipment, but you don't have to.

6. Send the kids to school. I know this article is about affording to homeschool, but there is no reason to buy supplies for an expensive subject like science. In Wisconsin, homeschooling families can send their kids to two classes per school year. Intimidating subjects like math and science can be taught for free at a public school. Summer school programs also exist if you'd like more flexibility throughout the year. Online courses are also abundant these days.
