Smart Start Homeschooling: 10 Free Digital Tools for Early Learning on a Budget!

Updated: Mar 18

Who said that homeschooling your children has to be a financial burden? In our current digital era, there are numerous tools available for home education, and these resources are both free and abundant. These tools below are some of our favorites. But I'd like to know, what would you add to the list?

1. Math Kids App

This fantastic app has math puzzles and games for kids ages 3-12. Lucas and Friend's mission is to provide free education to any kid who doesn't have access to high-quality education. They have free pintables and many other resources! The best thing about these free apps is that they don't have ads. Zero!

2. Dr. Binocs on YouTube

If you're looking for short and easily digestible episodes on health, weather, hostory and science subjects, Dr. Binocs is a perfect choice. The channel is ideal for children ages 5-10.

3. Spanish for Kids

With this app, kids can begin building their Spanish vocab, which is suitable for all ages.

4. Learn to Read Sight Words

This is another Lucas and Friends app that teaches sight words and sentence building through games. The app teaches kids up to a 3rd-grade level.

4. Visit Nature Centers at State and National Parks

At parks, families can exercise, and learn about the local history, wildlife, geology, weather, plants, and much more. Please don't forget to stop by the visitor center where the rangers hand out free nature journals or workbooks; when they are completed, children are awarded a patch!

5. Little Free Libraries

While the inventory at a free library is limited and unpredictable, they are worth a quick stop. Time after time, we've scored BIG at our free library. Don't forget, if you take a book, please donate a new one to replace it.

6. Starfall

This reading app teaches kids ages 4-9 to begin reading. If your child enjoys the app, there is also a paid version.

7. KLT on YouTube

This channel contains catchy and educational songs on various subjects like geography and the solar system. Be warned; the lyrics will get stuck in your head!

8. Number blocks ages 3-6

Our boys enjoy binge-watching number blocks! The show is about a bunch of silly block characters that stack up to demonstrate basic math problems. The episodes are very short, making it ideal for kids with short attention spans.

9. Vooks

This reading app is a fantastic tool for kids learning how to read. The animated stories are designed to keep children engaged and the words also light up as the stories are narrated.

10. Khan Academy Kids

Khan Academy for Kids is an absolutely free mobile app that offers all the features you'd expect from a paid subscription. It comes packed with a plethora of educational lessons, allows individual profiles for each of your kids, and even enables parents to monitor their children's progress. Both of our boys use this app on their tablets, but I keep it downloaded on my phone for on-the-go lessons, travel, or unexpected delays when the little ones start getting restless.

11. Monster Math Squad- YouTube

"Monster Math Squad" stars the animated characters, Max, Lily, and Goo. The Squad are not the largest, most courageous, or even the smartest monsters in the neighborhood. However, they absolutely relish using their collective intelligence and math abilities to tackle any challenges that come their way.
